Fall 2007 . . . How Sweet it is
Fall was in the air and brought with it a stream of big projects (wins). The first win came in September when ADOT awarded CEI the Full Service Construction Administration for SR 86, Town of Sells project. This $10M, 3.2 mile roadway project consists of reconstructing three sections of existing roadway, adding shoulders to the existing roadway, reconstructing the Sells Wash Bridge and constructing a new eleven barrel box culvert at Murk Kul Wash. What’s even more exciting is the fact that this is the first big win for CEI’s Tucson Region, which is led by Mark Dunbar. Mark, a former ADOT Tucson Assistant District Engineer, managed many Tucson District projects, as well as provided input on the preliminary plans and reviewed comments for this particular project. The award of this ten month project introduces CEI’s newest Resident Engineer, Alfred Zuniga who will manage the day-to-day activities on the project. Alfred is a former ADOT Senior RE who spent six years working on ADOT projects. QT also joins the team and will be responsible for materials testing.
The second win came in early October when Tristar was awarded the design for Chandler’s South Arizona Avenue Corridor Improvements project. This $60M, CM@Risk Corridor project will develop the southern gateway to Downtown Chandler. The project encompasses seven or eight individual projects over a period of three years, including a major design project to acquire Right of Way and construct new roadway and pedestrian access points along Arizona Avenue. Tristar, the prime firm, partnered with PinnacleOne to provide a Deputy Project Manager who will assist with project coordination. CEI is a sub-consultant for Survey and Right of Way services. Due to the large scope of these projects and the amount of residential areas in the vicinity, Tristar is working with the City of Chandler to potentially open a project/public outreach office within the project area. This large design project is expected to be completed in late 2010.
November brought with it two more wins; one with the City of Phoenix and the other with ADOT. CEI (with QT as a sub-consultant) was one of two teams selected for the City of Phoenix Aviation Construction Inspection contract. The contract establishes a pool of seven to ten individuals to provide inspection services, as needed, for ongoing or scheduled aviation projects.
Tristar (with CEI and QT as sub-consultants) was awarded the $67M I-17 Median Widening project. This full service construction administration project runs from Union Hills to Jomax Road and allows our Cotton Lane Team to transition to their new home for the next 22 months. The project, which entails major coordination with adjacent projects, will be led by Project Principal, John Akin and Senior RE, Carlos Lara.
December closed out the year with a bang with two more wins for our companies!! CEI, Tristar and QT, all sub-consultants to Stanley Group were successfully awarded the Red Mountain Freeway (SR202L) General Consultant (GC) Contract. As part of the GC Team, we will be working closely with ADOT on this $184M design/build project to add eastbound and westbound general purpose lanes on SR 202L. This project is expected to last for three years.
The last win of the year involved all four of our companies. CEI was the prime with sub-consultants Tristar, QT, TCE and Hatch Mott MacDonald for the City of Phoenix Airport Development Services Qualified Vendor List. Our Team submitted on and was approved for all five categories (Project Management, Program Controls, Quality Control, Construction Phase Services and Support Services) with 19 sub-categories. This qualified vendor list was prepared to provide a variety of services in support of the Aviation Department’s 10-year, $3.3B Capital Improvement Program.
